What is Craniosacral Therapy? (CST)

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, non-invasive hands-on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance.

Your practitioner uses a gentle touch to release restrictions in the soft tissues that surround the central nervous system bringing balance to the CranioSacral System.

The craniosacral system is made up of the meningeal membranes (that surround and support the brain and spinal cord), the bones of the skull, face and mouth, the spinal column extending down to the sacrum and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. The fluid moving around the system produces a rhythm (similar to the rhythm of the cardiovascular and respiratory system) that your practitioner will tune in to, to see how it is performing and how its function can be improved.

This gentle therapy can be incredibly powerful.

CST has the potential to help a wide range of conditions. It can help you:

  • Feel freer in your body,

  • Have less pain, discomfort and dysfunction

  • Listen to and understand messages different parts of your body (such as your gut, heart, pelvis) are sending to you.

  • Release longstanding feelings such as sadness, guilt and anxiety

  • Restore balance to your system

  • Relax your nervous system which in turn relaxes your body and lets it heal more effectively.

CST is also used as a preventative health measure because it stimulates the body’s natural healing process.

What can I expect from a treatment?

Your therapists will take a full health case history as your past health has a bearing on your health now.  You remain fully clothed for the treatment and once you are in a comfortable position on the bed, your therapist will gently place their hands on your body and tune into your body’s craniosacral rhythm.

Your therapist will notice where your rhythm feels strained, non-symmetrical, faster or slower  and if this is your first treatment they may work through our 10 step protocol, designed to free up all areas of the body and CSS as much as possible.

Your therapist may be drawn to a particular part of your body, this is because your body intuitively knows exactly what to do and your therapist is listening and responding to help it.  Because of this treatments can vary, you may feel a deep sense of relaxation in one session where as your muscles may twitch in another and you may also feel emotional at times  - this all depends on what your body brings to the table that day.
